Anise Seeds

The anise seeds are derived from a perennial flower known as the anise flower, Pimpinella anisum.  This flower is one of the primary members of the crowded apiaceae family.  This family also contains carrots and celery.  The anise flower thrives in the Mediterranean region, but it can be found all over the world.  The seeds are created a month after the flowers bloom in mid to late summer.  These seeds are in the rough shape of a comma shape and are about 3 mm.  Their color is light brown the outside skin has thin stripes.  The seeds are unique because they contain a natural compound called anethole. Anethole is extremely healthy and causes most of the seeds benefits.

Anise Seeds History

anise seeds appearance

Anise seeds have a rich and distinguished history.  The Anise plant (Pimpinella anisum) seeds were extremely valuable in several ancient cultures.  The Romans and Greeks highly valued anise seeds and anise tea.  The seeds were treated as a precious commodity and were in short supply.  The seeds could be use to barter and trade, and they could even be used to pay taxes.  The anise seeds had a benefit over other forms of currency; they could be consumed to help with digestive issues and reduced bloat and flatulence.

Anise Seeds Alternate Uses

The Greeks and Romans believed that anise seeds had magical powers and could ward off and protect from evil spirits.  The Romans baked the Anise seeds into wedding cakes and they used the seeds for other ceremonial purposes as well. The Romans and Greeks also placed the Anise seeds on their pillow before going to sleep to protect themselves from nightmares.  The Romans used the seeds during labor in hopes that the pleasant aroma would distract from birthing pains.

Purchase Anise Seeds

I decided to add a link for some high quality seeds on this post.  This is an Amazon link for Davidson’s Anise Seeds.  This is currently my favorite brand of anise, and the price is extremely reasonable at $15.  These seeds are certified organic and non-GMO.  I like the Davidson’s brand because they are always fresh.  I love the fresh smell, and I always sniff the bag right after I open it.  This is a one pound bag, and it will last a long time.  Mine usually lasts me around 2-3 months, and I drink anise tea regularly.
